DCFS Benefits from SIPV
December 1, 2009 was our annual Christmas/Holiday Pot Luck meeting and once again SIPV members came through.
The Department of Child & Family Services were the recipients of gifts of pajamas, socks and underwear for their child and teen clients.
Cheri Kelly, DCFS Supervisor spoke about the children in their files and the services the agency provides to the community of Pahrump. The stories were a mixture of heart breaking and heart warming. Following the meeting a delicious pot luck was enjoyed by all in attendance.

SIGNATURE EVENT SHADOW YOUR FUTURE IS A WINNER ONCE AGAIN
Day One of our signature event, the Career Success Seminar, took place on Sunday October 25th at CC's Beauty Zone. Close to twenty high school students attended. The seminar included career fundamentals presented by SIPV Past President Willi Baer and dressing for success presented by RaJean Higginson. Other presenters were President-Elect Jennifer Wade, Electa Hewitt and make-up artist Megan Gauthier. The day was hosted by President Claudette and the girls enjoyed a deli lunch platter from Albertsons.
Day Two took place at the Charleston Peak Clubhouse at The Winery and began with a continental breakfast for the mentors and students before they headed off for their day of shadowing in the career of their choice.
After the event word reached us that both mentors and students in general greatly enjoyed their day which provided them with some very basic knowledge and insight into which career they would like to follow.
Member News
Congratulations to Charter member Tonya Brum on her retirement from Nathan Adelson Hospice where she worked tirelessly for the past 6 years.
SIPV members Helene Campton, Janet Lubera, Joyce Schnelzer, Willi Baer and President Claudette served on Tonya’s event council called the Golden Monarchs. SIPV also participated jointly with the hospice in other community events such as Relay For Life which was often spearheaded by Tonya. Don’t worry, Tonya has not retired from SIPV!
Congratulations to Willi Baer who has just published her first book called “The Care and Feeding of a Non-Profit Board” which is now available on Amazon.com and Authorhouse.com and in Barnes & Nobles. Look for Willi at the next SNR meeting in Reno in April where she will be peddling her books. For every book sold a dollar will be donated back to her home club SI Pahrump Valley. Willi’s next book will be out in 2010 and is called “The Care and Feeding of a Non-Profit Exec” and subtitled “Thriving on Chaos”.
"S" Club in the works
The first organizational meeting of the S Club was held in December at CC's Beauty Zone and was attended by ten high school students. The girls stepped up to the plate and were charged with securing a location for meetings to be held at the high school. More to come....
Chips For Charity... .a winner for SIPV
The first poker tournament to benefit SIPV took place in November at The Pahrump Nugget. About 30 plus players circled the tables at a fun event headed up by the Nugget's poker director Jeff Van Alst. Prizes were also donated by the Nugget as well as Valley Electric, Walmart and SIPV members. Many participants won prizes including SIPV members. Donna Smith won the VE certificate for $50.00 off her power bill; Willi Baer won the $100.00 Walmart gift card; Helene Campton won the coffee/tea gift basket; Stacy Smith won the sewing gift basket, and Mary Baloqui won dinner at Stockman's Steakhouse. This proves ladies that you can't win unless you participate. Thanks to SIPV members who showed up to play or volunteer for the evening: Andra Braden, Tonya Brum, Stacy Smith, Donna Smith, Jennifer Wade and Willi Baer. Jeff has committed to doing it again for our Soroptimist club in 2010.
District 1 Winter meeting is coming up once again in March. It was wonderful to have so many SIPV members attend the Fall District meeting. We had a full table. Can we do it again ladies?
